Start with the task, not the appearance
Forceps, scissors and vascular clamps are not interchangeable simply because they look similar. Identify whether the task calls for grasping, cutting or temporary clamping. WPI distinguishes spring thumb forceps from hinged instruments and describes straight, curved and angled tip configurations.
Separate the dimensions shown in a photo
Overall length, jaw length and tip width describe different parts. Confirm the measurement location and unit rather than treating one number as a complete specification. Compare the option name, written specification and matching image together.
- Forceps: review tip shape, alignment and overall length.
- Scissors: review curvature, tip configuration, blade and available working space.
- Clamps: confirm jaw configuration and required clamping characteristics; request missing force information.
Check sets and individual instruments separately
Similar set names do not guarantee identical contents. Check each instrument type, dimension and quantity, including whether a case is supplied. When replacing an individual instrument, provide the existing model, measurements or a clear photo.
Include maintenance in the purchasing check
Fine Science Tools advises prompt removal of organic residue and appropriate care of instrument joints. Follow the purchased model's instructions and institutional procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and lubrication. A stainless-steel description alone does not establish compatibility with every process.
