PURCHASING GUIDE

Animal-facility purchasing: transport, weighing, identification and supplies

Organize routine purchasing by task and verify dimensions, quantities, cleaning and local facility requirements.

Organize the list by task

Separate transport, weighing, identification, preparation and supporting consumables. Transport boxes, restraint devices and handling aids serve different requirements; do not assume one product replaces equipment for every stage.

Tie each dimension and quantity to a requirement

For transport items, check internal dimensions, ventilation, closures and cleaning information. For balances, review capacity, readability, platform or container configuration and calibration information; readability is not the same as accuracy. For identification supplies, confirm dimensions, numbering and the facility's record system. These are purchasing questions, not claims that every listed model provides each feature.

Equipment does not replace training

NC3Rs summarizes research on refined mouse handling, including tunnel and cupping methods. Facility staff should establish appropriate handling and training under approved procedures. The name of a protective or handling aid is not evidence of stress reduction or guaranteed safety.

Order consumables by package and consumption

Record package quantities, frequency of use, replenishment intervals, storage and disposal requirements. Verify any required sterile status or processing compatibility against the actual label and instructions. On receipt, check each option and package against the purchasing record.
