Small-animal scales: capacity, readability and receiving checks

Check capacity, display readability, container load, power and tray contents separately. Use the same option record at receiving, without treating decimal places as accuracy or assuming dynamic animal weighing.

By Zhonglong Bio

Break the full option name into checkable fields

Zhonglong's current small-animal scale page lists distinct options such as battery-powered, 500 g / 0.01 g with two trays, and rechargeable, 3 kg / 0.1 g with two trays. Record power type, nominal capacity, nominal readability and accessories separately. These are catalogue labels, not independent verification results produced for this guide.

An option labelled large, battery-powered, 5 kg does not state its readability. Do not copy 0.1 g from another option. Mark missing readability, pan dimensions, tray contents and documentation for confirmation, then retain the exact option name and matching image.

Include additional containers in the load requirement

Compare capacity with more than the expected animal weight: include any extra container or accessory placed on the pan. Adam Equipment explains that taring the display does not restore capacity already occupied by the load. Give the supplier both the expected object weight and additional container weight.

  • Record the lightest and heaviest expected objects and extra containers, using consistent units.
  • Confirm the actual model's capacity, tare range and container configuration.
  • A tared display is not the total physical load on the pan. Do not use overload testing for receiving.

A 0.01 g display interval is not an accuracy guarantee

Readability describes the interval between adjacent displayed values; it does not by itself establish closeness to a reference value. Sartorius lists readability, repeatability and linearity deviation separately. Request these details separately rather than comparing decimal places alone.

Have the research team define the required weight range and acceptable error, then review model information, conditions and agreed acceptance criteria. Ask whether calibration or checking documentation is supplied and which instrument it identifies. A 0.01 g label does not establish accuracy of plus or minus 0.01 g. Reference-brand figures do not describe Zhonglong models.

An animal-scale name does not establish dynamic weighing

A live subject can move. If the workflow requires dynamic weighing, averaging, a stability indication, display hold or data export, ask about each feature for the exact model. Sartorius lists animal weighing as a separate application: the application itself needs checking, not inferring from appearance or a product heading.

Zhonglong's current option list does not specify every feature above, and this guide does not promise that any model provides them. Describe the recording setting, required readout and data handover, and request model instructions. Animal handling and recording methods remain subject to the institution's approved procedures.

Confirm power, workspace and trays for the selected version

Keep battery-powered and rechargeable versions distinct in the order. Confirm the battery type and whether batteries, a charging lead or an adapter are included. Check input requirements against the actual model label; a similar connector does not establish power-supply compatibility.

For a two-tray option, confirm each tray's dimensions, purpose and cleaning information. Large is not a full dimensional specification: check the pan, container footprint and available bench space. Describe any drafts or vibration to the supplier and request model-specific conditions instead of applying another brand's environmental limits.

Match the order, delivered items and model documentation

Adam Equipment's unpacking guidance calls for checking the supplied components and preparing the instrument according to its instructions. For the purchased Zhonglong model, match packaging, label, full option, quantities, trays and power accessories to the order, and photograph damage or discrepancies. The reference model's accessories and preparation times are not Zhonglong specifications.

For performance acceptance, laboratory or metrology staff should define checks against agreed requirements, including reference weights, records and acceptance criteria. Random objects or a moving animal's readings do not prove accuracy. Retain packaging, record unexpected indications and contact the supplier when concerns arise. This is purchasing and receiving guidance, not animal-procedure or dosing instruction.
